Tackling Plastic Waste (AEPW)
Country / City: Ethiopia, India, Kenya (Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Mombasa, Nairobi)
The key message of the SDGs – leaving no one behind – is the central idea of this mother project, which focuses on supporting the improved access to and quality of waste management services for diverse population groups. UN-Habitat HQ Kenya in collaboration with its country offices in Ethiopia and India shall work in 6 target cities to support cities in assessing waste management status and develop city specific project proposals under the Alliance to End Plastic Waste funded project.
Through the application of the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WWCT), thee project will support cities in establishing better waste and resource management strategies, creating business and livelihood opportunities, and transiting towards a circular economy. Globally basic data on MSW generation and management is lacking, especially in low- and middle-income settings. This lack of data hinders the development of management strategies and investments in infrastructure, leading in many countries to insufficient or absent MSW management services. Poor MSW collection and management pose severe threats to public health and environment, by polluting air, soil and waterbodies. Mismanaged waste is also the main contributor to marine litter.
The project aims at achieving the following outcomes:
1. WFD (waste flows and plastic leakage maps) in each target city is assessed and designed
2. Ability of target cities to identify quick win actions and infrastructure gaps to reduce the plastic leakage is enhanced
3. Interventions to decrease plastic leakage are identified
